Toyota is gradually elevating its Century line into a standalone prestige marque in certain markets, a move that's intended to give Lexus the freedom to be a bit more expressive. The irony is that Lexus was arguably at its finest when it was being deeply, meticulously serious about everything.
This long-wheelbase LS460 L, currently listed on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos), makes that case convincingly. It's a composed and handsome machine, unburdened by the oversized grilles and busy visual drama of today's luxury offerings. Restrained in both looks and demeanor, it's the embodiment of the brand's old tagline: "The relentless pursuit of perfection."
This particular example shows just 23,000 miles and has lived its entire life in California's temperate climate. Its history is accident-free, and the car presents in excellent condition throughout.
The interior wraps its occupants in wood and leather executed with the exacting build quality that Lexus was known for at the time. Feature content is substantial: heated and ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, a powered rear sunshade, and integrated navigation all come as part of the package.
The audio system is a Mark Levinson unit, and it is genuinely exceptional. With 19 speakers and a CD player, this car can produce a level of sonic richness that streaming audio simply doesn't match. Anyone who cares deeply about how music sounds will find this car extraordinarily satisfying as a listening environment.
And this rolling concert hall also happens to go. The 4.6-liter V-8 produces 380 horsepower, routed through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels. In an era when subtlety is in short supply, this Lexus has it in abundance — and subtlety, properly executed, may be the most genuinely luxurious quality of all.
