For a heavy pickup truck, you need a ramp pair rated for 16,000 pounds or more. Steel ramps are heavy and stable. Plastic ramps are lighter and cheaper. When your front tire is halfway up the incline, the force is split between the two axles. The maximum force on a single ramp happens right as the tire transitions from the incline to the flat platform. At that moment, roughly 60 to 70 percent of the vehicle's weight can be on the front wheels. So a 6,000-pound per-ramp rating for a 4,000-pound vehicle gives you a solid margin. But if you have a 7,000-pound diesel truck, you need 8,000-pound per-ramp ratings minimum. Don't trust a label that doesn't state the per-ramp figure. If it only says "weight capacity" with no per-pair clarification, write to the manufacturer before you buy.

How to Use Ramps Safely

Here's the procedure I follow in my own garage. Park on flat ground, chock the rear wheels, set the parking brake, and put the transmission in park. Position the car ramps squarely in front of the front tires. Drive forward slowly until both tires sit fully on the platform. Set the brakes again, then place jack stands under the frame as a backup.
